If a community's worth can be measured by the value it places on its children and youth, and a principle component of that evaluation is the quality of the school system, Davison has met the challenge well.  A multi-faceted program, with something for students at all levels of capability and a broad spectrum of interests, is provided.

While basic educational skills quite correctly receive the greatest attention, enrichment programs in the fine arts and athletics, opportunities for academically talented students and those whose interests are oriented toward vocational pursuits, community education for preschoolers, youth and adults, and supplemental programs for students who need special education services and other kinds of individual help are all part of what makes the Davison Community Schools system among the finest that can be found.

The personal, human touch in the school system here is among its greatest strengths.  The individual is important.  Rigid academic programs are not the norm;  programs tailored to meet needs are.  It is the belief that schools are people, not programs, an as such must be responsive to the community that guides the faculty and staff as they work with the children and youth enrolled in the schools.

The excellence of what happens in the classroom is evidenced by the fact that Davison has consistently numbered National Merit finalists, Regents' Scholars, and Michigan Competitive Scholars as well as many recipients of university sponsored scholarships for academic excellence and leadership among its students.

Several programs contribute to this superior performance and they begin early in a child's education in Davison.  There are two multi-grade pull out elementary classes for gifted and academically talented students.  Formal computer classes are offered from fourth through twelfth grades.  An individualized reading program is available to all students beginning in kindergarten and extending through twelfth grade, including a reading support program for those with low reading skills.

As they enter the upper grades, students may choose accelerated courses in biology and chemistry and may opt to enroll in a five-year mathematics sequence which culminates with calculus.  Eighty percent of high school students in Davison take math courses beyond the minimum required for graduation.

Students with high ability in math, science and English may choose to receive college level credit by taking and scoring well on Advance college Placement Tests.  others receive college credit while still in high school by taking additional course work through local institutions of higher learning.

At the same time that some students are pursuing college preparatory classes, those who need extra help are also having their needs met on an individualized basis.  A team approach, with parents recognized as important contributing members of the planning team, is emphasized.  As much as possible, students with handicaps are mainstreamed into regular class.  Additionally, a full complement of special classes is available throughout the district; and a variety of programs for young people who need specialized training is available in cooperation with the Genesee Intermediate School district and the Flint Community Schools.

Young people who are interested in vocational education are extremely fortunate.  Davison is unique among the Genesee Intermediate School District school systems in that it has its own separate vocational building.  Students may choose either to attend the Genesee Area Skill Center or to enroll in vocational programs right in their own home school district.

There are a number of career-oriented programs available in Davison from auto mechanics and electronics to food services and mechanical drawing.  Some of these offer practical experience right within the program.  Marketing and management functions are learned and applied in the "Cardinal Shop," a school store; building trades are learned as students build a home to be sold on the open market; and students in the child care and guidance curriculum plan lessons and carry them out in pre-school lab sessions.
